5 Movies

It's day 4, and...and....hello? Hello? Is this thing on? Anybody out there? Anybody? Test. Test...

...anyway, it's day 4, and you're well into your favorite books, but as it turns out, reading books on a desert island is equal parts relaxing AND boring. So, here you are, a little bored and thinking to yourself, this book is great and all, but wouldn't it hurry things along to just watch the movie? Well, wouldn't you know it, right as you're having this thought, another crate washes up on the beach, and what's in it but a generator, a 19" television, a VCR and a stash of VHS tapes. Strangely, as you sift through the stack, you come across all 5 of your favorite movies. At this point, you know you must be hallucinating, but who cares? Here are your 5 favorite desert island movies and here you are, on a desert island! It's time to plug these things into your generator, kick back with a coconut shell full of sea water and bring on the crazy. But what 5 movies would you choose? What 5 films would you want with you on a desert island? Share your picks with the rest of us castaways in the comments section.

  1. Hmmm.... Let's see.

    1) A Clockwork Orange, maybe I'll have time to finally decipher all that slang Alex and his droogies are slinging at each other. Plus gotta think Singin' in the Rain bit would brighten my dark heart.

    2) The Third Man, Harry Lime watering down the penicillin, what a despicable character, a despicable character with the best reveal ever in cinema. Plus, I love that score.

    3) Chinatown, it's my daughter, my sister, my daughter, my sister, yes I'd a probably slapped here around too.

4)Pulp Fiction, what can I say folks, this is the one film that put me on the path I continue on today. Realizing films could do so much more than just present us a story with a beginning, middle, and end. To be 16 again.

5)Dances With Wolves (Directors cut) this one is needed in case I decide to bore myself to death. I made the mistake of watching this once roughly 10 years, clocking in just a shade under 4 hours, I'd be praying for sweet release. It would help me realize maybe death isn't so bad.

  2. 1. Girls Just Wanna Have Fun--by far Helen Hunt's best work to date.
    2. Pride and Prejudice--the old version, since I'd actually have time to watch it as well as the newer version which I actually like a little better (wait, they probably never made the newer one on VHS, so I guess we'd better stick to old school).
    3. SNL-Best of Will Ferrell--I gotta have more cowbell on the island.
    4. Can't Buy Me Love--Patrick Dempsey pre-nose job and pre-Grey's Anatomy when he was the epitome of geeky cute.
    5. Gone With the Wind--Best movie ever. Makes me cry every time.

  3. 1. Garden State- my favorite movie.
    2. Lord of the Rings, extended edition, box set- there is no charge for awesomeness.
    3. Beauty and the Beast- only one animated movie?! This is like a movie and CD in one.
    4. Gone with the Wind- the ultimate epic love story.
    5. Babe- I love Babe, and I think my lemur will too.

  4. 1. The Breakfast Club
    2. The Breakfast Club in case it gets scratched or something.
    3. Brofsky vs. Brofsky: The Complete Nintendo Showdown. This is, of course, the greatest video game inspired tennis movie ever made. Stars Nick Nolte and Gary Busey as Brofskys.
    4. The Lord of the Rings, ditto Meredith
    5. Donnie Darko because I want to sound really cool on this blog here.

  5. 1. The Third Man. It's my favorite movie.
    2. The Decalogue. I've never watched this because it's something like 20 hours long. It's supposed to be awesome, so maybe a desert island is the right place to pick it up. Also: it's about the ten commandments. That should be fitting, right? Since I'll have all those neighbors??
    3. Jaws, so I maintain a healthy fear of the ocean.
    4. Raising Arizona. It's another one of my personal favorites, and I think it would help to remind me that maybe life on the mainland isn't all that much healthier than life in the middle of nowhere.
    5. The Evil Dead.

  6. I would have to second Jaws and Raising Arizona. Classic. Um... someting like (I'm feeling extremely ambivalent right now):

    1. Coen: No Country for Old Men...maybe, or O Brother Where Art Thou... (if not Raising Arizona)
    2. Williams: Awakenings or Dead Poet's Society
    3. Gilliam: Time Bandits or The Fisherking
    4. King: Stand By Me or Shawshank Redemption, or maybe The Green Mile
    5. Comedy: Nacho Libre or Napolean Dynamite (followed by Juno) or maybe Woody Allen's Zelig. Love it.

    Why? Because they're all awesome.

BTW, this is an impossible assignment. The list will change tomorrow, and then the next day...

  7. 1. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof--lovely Southern melodrama with Paul Newman at his most gorgeous

    2. GWTW--the original Southern melodrama

    3. A Hard Day's Night--wacky Beatley goodness

    4. Tombstone--utterly quotable and Val Kilmer

    5. The Shawshank Redemption- the end voice-over about hope? That would get me through long days on the island

    Honorable Mention:
    Friday
    Velvet Goldmine
    Pride and Prejudice

  11. Excellent job, all around. I'm glad to see so many of you are still out there. It appears the trick is to wait long enough to give you a chance to post, so my new goal is one new post each two weeks. That gives you loads of time, which means you have time to post, and the more you post, the more I feel important and loved.

As for your winner of this round: I have to go with Joe. There were a lot of interesting nominees, but as we know by now, the trick is to make me laugh...and the Dances With Wolves joke got me good.

    Until next time, keep playing.

    Thanks,
    Management
